At least, that is what I tell myself until I see a permadeath mode in a game I love. Then suddenly I am entering ancient cheat codes at 2 a.m., whispering 'this will be fine' to my monitor. That is exactly what happened when I learned about Hollow Knight: Silksong's Steel Soul mode. In the original Hollow Knight, Steel Soul was simple and cruel: die once, and your save is gone. Silksong brings that same energy back. Normally, you would have to beat the whole game first to unlock it. But there is a shortcut, and it is hiding in plain sight.
The Konami Code Still Works, Because of Course It Does
If you grew up anywhere near a controller, you know the Konami Code. Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A. It is the cheat code equivalent of a handshake. In Silksong, you can input it while viewing the Extras menu. Do that, and you unlock Steel Soul mode immediately. No full playthrough required. No final boss victory lap. Just a forbidden ritual and a sudden sense of dread.
PCGamer credited a Reddit user for proving the unlock existed. I love that. In 2026, with datamining and guide wikis everywhere, an old-school cheat code can still feel like a secret passed around a schoolyard. Except now the schoolyard is a subreddit, and the secret is 'enjoy permanent death, idiot.'
What Steel Soul Actually Does
Steel Soul is not a difficulty slider. It is a lifestyle choice. Here is the basic breakdown:
Mode
How you unlock it
What happens when you die
Normal
Default
You respawn and try again
Steel Soul
Beat the game, or enter the Konami Code in Extras
Your run is over. Permanently.
That is it. That is the whole pitch. One life. No continues. No second chances. If you fall to a random enemy in a room you have cleared ten times, that is the run. If you misjudge a jump, that is the run. If your cat walks across your keyboard during a boss fight, that is also the run, and your cat is now the villain of your personal story.
Team Cherry Made Things Easier. Steel Soul Says No.
After Silksong launched, plenty of players complained about the difficulty. Team Cherry listened. The first patch was designed to soften some early-game areas. Sandcarvers were supposed to deal less damage. The Moorwing and Sister Splinter bosses were meant to be a touch more merciful. Several other adjustments were aimed at making the opening hours less brutal.
That is good news for most people. It is also completely irrelevant if you choose Steel Soul. You can take every kindness the patch offers and still get deleted by one bad dodge. The patch lowers the floor. Steel Soul removes the floor, the ceiling, and the safety net. If you want the gentler version, play normal mode. If you want to feel your pulse in your teeth, enter the code.
Should You Do This on Your First Run?
Probably not. Actually, definitely not. Steel Soul is not designed for a blind first playthrough. You do not know the boss patterns. You do not know which enemies explode. You do not know where the traps are. You do not know that one room is going to ask you to do a precision platforming sequence while something horrible breathes down your neck.
But 'probably not' is not 'never.' Some people love the tension. Some people want every decision to matter. Some people think a normal save file is just a rehearsal. If you are that kind of player, the Konami Code is your enabler. It lets you skip the prerequisite and jump straight into the anxiety simulator.
I tried it for about an hour. My hands were sweating. I played slower than I have ever played a game. I checked every corner twice. Then I walked into a room I thought was safe, got hit by something I never saw, and stared at the screen like it had personally betrayed me. Ten out of ten. Would suffer again.
Does This Ruin the Reward?
Maybe a little. Unlocking a mode by beating the game is a badge of honor. Unlocking it with a cheat code is more like finding a back door. But here is the thing: the real reward was never the unlock. The real reward is actually beating Steel Soul. Bragging that you have the mode unlocked but never played it is not impressive. Bragging that you finished a permadeath run in Silksong? That is the kind of thing that makes people either bow or back away slowly.
So yes, the Konami Code diminishes the completion reward slightly. It also opens the door for more people to experience one of the most intense ways to play. I think that trade is worth it. Team Cherry clearly knows the code is there. They left it in. That feels like a wink.
Final Thoughts
If you are playing Silksong in 2026 and you want a fresh reason to be nervous, go to the Extras menu. Enter the code. Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A. Then start a new file and accept that every mistake is final. It is stupid. It is brutal. It is also one of the most memorable ways to replay a game less
